Irving Rappaport and Playback Theatre proudly present

the Life & Rhymes of Ian Dury

HIT ME! is a warts-and-all portrait of the man who put the phrase "sex and drugs and rock and roll" into the national psyche. Publicly, Ian Dury seemed a cheeky chappie, a purveyor of saucy lyrics, like a pop-art music hall knees-up. Privately, as with many artists, he wrestled with a variety of demons.

Culled from interviews with Dury and the friends and colleagues he left behind, playwright Jeff Merrifield weaves a flawed maestro, focusing on three key moments – at the peak of his success, on the cusp of a comeback and just after his death – moving from heated dialogues to confessional monologues, all interspersed with live bursts of staple songs such as Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick and Reasons to be Cheerful. Comes to the Courtyard following a highly successful Edinburgh Festival run - where it was known as ABFCAP: the Life & Rhymes of Ian Dury.

“BRILLIANT … tells a truly fascinating story with both humour and brutal reality – this show stands out by a mile – 5 stars” Ray Jones: British Theatre Web

“I wish I could find something negative to say about this production: my critical faculties were numbed by Jeff Merrifield’s impeccable direction and the astounding performances of Jud Charlton as Ian Dury and Josh Darcy as Fred ‘Spider’ Rowe… acting of the highest order. Five stars is not enough. This production must not come to an end – even a glorious one – in Edinburgh: it deserves the widest possible exposure.” Richard Franklin: Fringe Review

“Jeff Merrifield's script is faultless… Jud Charlton is superb as Ian Dury… Josh Darcy, as Fred Rowe is impossible to fault – 5 stars” David Hepburn: Fringe Report
